Mauro Armelin
Mauro leads WWF’s work on helping forest communities in the Brazilian Amazon make a living by using their natural resources in a sustainable way. His work takes in everything from timber and Brazil nuts to giant fish and essential oils. He is passionate about promoting development in the Amazon based on managing the region’s rich natural resources sustainably, in a way that benefits both the biodiversity and the people of the forest.
Mauro has a degree and a Masters in Forestry from the University of São Paulo. He developed an interest in how forest communities can manage their resources sustainably during a research project in the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo.
Mauro worked on a sustainable timber project for Friends of the Earth Brazil and as a consultant to the Brazilian government environment agency before joining WWF-Brazil in 2005 to coordinate forest policy work. Through his work, Mauro has helped put forest conservation and management and the marketing of sustainable forest products on the political agenda in Brazil.
Mauro says: “Sky Rainforest Rescue provides an important opportunity to establish a development model that values forest products and forest services, to bring us closer to achieving a sustainable future for the Amazon.”
